refuge is the debut album by pianist David Levine—an hour of classical piano offering solace from life's storms. Featuring timeless works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin, and more, this collection serves as a musical sanctuary, a space to breathe, escape, and find peace through sound.
The album includes well-known favorites such as: "Clair de Lune" (Debussy) , "Moonlight Sonata: I. Adagio sostenuto" (Beethoven), "Für Elise" (Beethoven), "Liebestraum No. 3" (Liszt), and "Träumerei" (Schumann)
Every sale of the album funds the donation of a CD to the libraries of Medical-Rehabilitation and Memory-Care facilities, as David Levine does pro-bono performances as part of his "Music Heals" initiative.
Classical music has a unique ability to create space for quiet reflection. Refuge is built on that idea: an hour of solo piano, blending well-known classics with lesser-known gems, designed to offer a moment of calm amid our modern way of life. It is more important than ever to find intentionally inclusive spaces that promote healing and joy.
David Levine's musical upbringing includes self-guided study & exploration, rather than the traditional approach (formal lessons/schooling). He shares accessible classical music that feels human & expressive to an online audience of over 20,000 subscribers.
While working full-time as an accountant, his passion for classical piano has remained his life's purpose, driving him to study, interpret, and share his favorite pieces of music with an ever-growing audience. Through his music heals initiative, David does pro-bono performances for audiences of Medical-Rehabilitation and Memory-Care facilities.
Chronic Illness & Music as Healing: Music has been a personal refuge in living with chronic illness, but also a way to connect with those facing illness and aging. He focuses on accessibility, empathy, and comfort for those who need it most. He also believes that fellow musicians with chronic illness should feel empowered to respect their body’s limitations, pursuing excellence in ways that are sustainable, rather than forcing their bodies to become depleted.
Non-Traditional Musical Path: Without formal training, his approach to piano is rooted in self-guided study, obsession with composers, and prioritizing emotion over perfection, making classical music more approachable.
Balancing Art with a Full-Time Career: Working as an accountant, Levine treats music as his life’s purpose, proving that serious artistry doesn’t require a traditional career in the industry.
Normalizing Stage Fright & Anxiety in Music: Sharing music should bring joy, not excessive pressure or worry. Levine believes in coming to terms with performance anxiety and self-doubt as part of the creative process, while also recognizing that musicians don’t have to force themselves beyond their comfort zone to be legitimate artists. Sharing music in a meaningful way can be done in other ways than simply performing live in front of an attentive audience.
